Dan Wang is a must-follow for people in the West interested in what is happening in China. He describes his writings, informed by his work at a global macro research firm as "figuring out China’s technology capabilities and how quickly they’re improving. Broadly speaking, I’m trying to understand the East Asian industrialization story: the history and the path forward."
Each year he writes an annual letter. If you are new to Dan's writing, it's a great place to start.

Few Americans know the full history of Argentina before its rot in the mid to late 20th century. For a time, it was one of the most dynamic and rich centuries in the "new world." In fact, in the 19th century, many Italians chose Buenos Aires over New York as the city of the future. Millions immigrated there, just as they did to Brooklyn.
Of course, many mistakes were made and Buenos Aires remains a wonderful place but a closed, crawling economy. I did recently find photographic proof of Argentina in its beautiful youth (recently colorized).

I've spent little time in Africa. We visited Morocco in the north and South Africa in the South. But the landscape and its variety still escapes me. I came across this picture and was taken aback by the mountains in the East and along the coasts.
