Book of the Week
I had shied away from the book Sapiens for years. It seemed cold to study humans as animals, hard-wired by DNA and evolution.
But as I read it, I found that when our distant history is studied in this way, the incredible story of humans, emerging from hunter gathers to culture builders to planet sculptors, led me to a clear view of the magic and humility we should feel for our ancestors; and for this current moment, as this species, in this blue dot amongst the stars.
Put simply, the more one views the world through the lens of science, the more one begins to appreciate the unscientific - the spirit that flows through all of us that many refer to as "God."
ps. thanks to Matt for the nudge to pick this one up
Music of the Week
I have been humming these three songs to myself all week.
Song one: When I am missing home, I always turn to this classic track.
California Stars, a song by Billy Bragg & Wilco on Spotify
Song two: This track's chorus swings like Let it Bleed era Rolling Stones while the verses tell a harrowing story of vice and addiction. A bit of light shines at the end as the backing vocals push through Conor's wobbly voice, hoping for redemption and escape "Will you meet me at the station? / Promise me a long vacation / laying on the beach for hours.."
Overdue, a song by Conor Oberst on Spotify
Song three: You will find great story-telling in this track by Craig Finn from The Hold Steady. He sings about modern love, escapism and the desire in all of us to feel safe.
Rescue Blues, a song by Craig Finn on Spotify
Art of the Week
by Inge Prader.
Video of the Week
An inspiring look into Jim Carrey's passion for painting and his journey as an artist.
Choice quote:
"I think what makes someone an artist is they make models of their inner life. They make something physically come into being that is inspired by their emotions or their needs.. or what they feel the audience needs."
